A Border-Collie In Brisbane - Chapter 39 - Bluralto90 (2024)

Chapter Text

Bluey and I have been dating for about five and a half years now and it’s been going great. Almost everyone has accepted the fact that Bluey is dating a commoner. The taboo has been broken.

Apart from my love life, my personal life has also been going well. I still live with my mum, but that doesn’t annoy me. We both have a stable job and a steady household. Just the two of us. We’re happy.

My social life is also pretty good. I’ve kept up with most of my friends from high school. Most notably, Jack, Rusty, and Snickers. They’re all doing good, especially Jack and Rusty who got married. I was Rusty’s best man. Even though Snickers and Coco broke up, that didn’t drive him into the ground.

This Sunday, aka. Today, I’m going to a restaurant with the boys. We’ve been doing this each month at least once. We would catch up and see what we’ve been up to. Though we text and call each other sometimes, we’re normally way too busy to actually hang out in real life.

Jack works at a tech company as a server manager, Snickers became a news reporter, and Rusty got a cricket scholarship and is now a pro-cricketer for Brisbane.

Today, I wanted to ask the boys a certain question in particular.

I drove up to a sports bar. This was Rusty’s favourite restaurant in town. It didn’t surprise me. It had all of Rusty’s favourite stuff, like:

  1. Cricket playing on the TVs
  2. No fancy/nicer clothes needed
  3. Food that he was familiar with
  4. Five minute drive from his house

I walked in and located a table with a Dachshund sitting across from a Jack Russell and Red Kelpie. Snickers saw me and waved me over.

“There he is. How are you doing Mackers?” Snickers greeted me.

“Well, I’m doing pretty good. Y’know work will always be a bitch.” I replied, gaining a chuckle out of Jack.

“Yeah, it’s always nice to see you.” Jack replied. He was leaning on Rusty’s shoulder.

As I just got to the table, a waiter came to the table and took our orders.

“G’day. I’ll have the pub burger with no pickles, a side of chips, and a light beer.” Rusty ordered.

“Hello. I’ll have the 10-piece bone-in wings, buffalo and ranch on the side, and a cola.” Snickers ordered.

“Good man, Snickers. I’ll have the fish sandwich, malt vinegar, and I’ll stick with just a water.” I ordered.

“Thank you. I’ll have the chicken salad. I’ll also stick with water.” Jack ordered.

The waiter took the orders back to the kitchen. With that, we were back to our conversation.

We began talking about any plans we had for travelling. Rusty and Jack were going on vacation in 3 days to Papua New Guinea for two weeks. Snickers was going to Perth tomorrow for his sister’s birthday. Tomorrow, I was going to New Zealand with my mum and the Heelers for Bandit and Chilli’s anniversary. I would also get to visit my grandparents.

“Oh yeah, I remember when I went to Auckland for a cricket game. 5-3. We won.” Rusty mentioned a cricket game he played in two years ago. He always teased me because New Zealand lost.

“Uh huh, sure, whatever.” I responded, rolling my eyes. For my upcoming question, I wanted to be serious.

“Hey, can I ask you guys something?” I asked.

“Yeah sure.” Jack said.

“So, which of you guys proposed again?” Rusty raised his hand.

“Okay, Rusty. How did you propose?”

“What do you mean?”

“Like, what did you say before asking him to marry you?”

Oh, uhh. If I’m being real, I kinda yapped. I mentioned all the good times I’ve had with him, how it was a miracle that we’ve been together this long, and how much I love him. Then… I asked ‘will you make me the happiest dog in the whole wide world, and will you marry me?’“ Rusty held Jack’s paw and gave him a kiss on the cheek. This made Jack blush.

“Yeah, I don’t regret a thing. By the way, if you don’t mind, may I ask why you had that question?” I took a deep breath.

From my pocket, I pulled a small box about 7 centimetres. Inside was a silver ring encrusted with diamonds and a sapphire in the middle.

I mentioned the fact that I was thinking of proposing to Bluey.

Bandit was thrilled at that, so he took me out to a nice jewellery store and we selected a ring that Bluey would love.

When I showed the boys the ring, they stared in awe. Jack even squealed in excitement at the fact that one of his best friends was possibly going to get married.

“Oh my god, that’s beautiful.” Snickers whispered.

“Yeah, I wanted to ask so I had a basic idea of what to say.” I admitted.

“Mate, it may sound cringey, but just listen to your heart. You truly love her, right?” Jack asked me.

“More than anything in the universe.”

“It’ll be great. You got this, my future king.” Snickers patted my back.

We got our food and quickly ate it. It was typical bar food. Pretty good. After lunch, I headed back home.

I bid goodbye to my friends and made my way back home.

On the drive home, I got a call from Bluey.

———

Hey Kenzie!

Hey Blue. What’s up?

Oh, wait. Are you in the car?

Yeah.

Here, I’ll call you later.

No, no, it’s okay.

If you insist.

Alright, what did you need?

Right. Uhh, we’re buying the rooms for the New Zealand trip. Do you want a suite?

Bluey. If it has a bed and a bathroom, I’ll stay.

We’ll get the suite. We’ll do the four bed 3 bath suite.

Alright. If you insist.

Yes. I’ll see you next time.

You too. Love you.

I love you too. Buh bye!

———

Just as I hung up, I took a sigh of relief. I’m not exactly sure why. I’m just glad to have her.

“I love you Bluey… so much.” I whispered to myself.

I turned on some music as I drove back home.

The bull has gored the matador

The US army won the war

The meaning died in the metaphor

I hope you let it go

The phoenix burned, but did not rise

Now half the body’s paralysed

There’s no one left to criticise

I hope you let it go

I hope you let it go

I hope you let it go

The enemy’s invincible

I hope you let it go

The smooth beat of the song was very therapeutic to me.

I gently swayed and tapped my finger to the beat.

The prophet’s said we’d disappear

The prophet’s gone, but we’re still here

His prophecy was insincere

I hope you let it go

The righteous strength was foolish pride

The conquerors did not divide

The call keeps coming from inside

I hope you let it go

I hope you let it go

I hope you let it go

The enemy’s invincible

I hope you let it go

When everyone who lived it died

The files were declassified

The slobs still called it suicide

I hope you let it go

The signatories broke the pact

The surfer sacked the quarterback

The bag fell down onto the tracks

I hope you let it go

I hope you let it go

I hope you let it go

The enemy’s invincible

I hope you let it go

I got out of my car and walked upstairs to mine and my mum’s flat. Inside, my mum was watching TV while she packed for the trip.

“Hey, mum. I’m back.” I walked over to my mum and gave her a hug.

“Hey Mackie! How are you? How was everyone?” She asked cheerily.

“They’re good. Everyone’s doing good.”

“Nice. Also, you need to get packed. So, come on. I’ll help you.”

I went to my room and got out a few pairs of clothes, two swimsuits, my toiletries, and my computer. That’s all I needed. I took these out to the living room and started to put them in my suitcase. As I was packing, I decided it would be best to tell my mum.

“Hey, mum. Could I tell you something?”

“Hm? Of course, what is it?” My mum put down her clothes and fully turned to listen to me.

“Okay, if I tell you, you aren’t allowed to tell ANYONE else. Only Bandit know about this.”

“Okay? What is it?”

As I pulled the small box with the sapphire ring inside from my pocket, I could practically see the stars in her eyes. She stared at the ring in complete awe, covering her mouth with her paws. I could see a single tear form in her eye.

“Oh my gosh… You’re gonna propose?” My mum whispered.

“Yep!” I confirmed. I let my mum hold the ring. She admired each diamond that was crusted into the silver, the bright sapphire that finished the beauty of the ring.

“It’s beautiful.” She turned to me. “She’s gonna say yes. I’m so proud of you.” She handed the ring back to me and gave me a hug.

“You’re so big now. I said it already, but I’m so proud of you.”

“Thank you mum. I love you so much.” I gave her another hug.

Very soon, I was going to propose to Bluey.
