Celebrity golf tourney to benefit children

Carlsbad nonprofit Fresh Start Surgical Gifts will host its 27th annual Celebrity Golf Classic on March 3-4 at Fairbanks Ranch Country Club. The event will be hosted by Alfonso Ribeiro, best known for his role on “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” and “America’s Funniest Home Videos.” Proceeds go to the Fresh Start Medical Program to help kids with physical deformities. The event kicks off at 5 p.m. March 3 with co*cktail reception, dinner party and live/silent auction. During the golf tournament on March 4, each participating foursome will be paired with a celebrity or professional athlete for a day of golf. American Legion Post celebrates centennial

To celebrate the American Legion’s centennial this year, the San Dieguito American Legion Post 416 in Encinitas holds “A Salute to the Greatest Generation” at noon March 2 featuring 98-year-old World War II paratrooper Tom Rice. The nonprofit Legion traces its roots to March 15-17, 1919, in Paris, France, in the aftermath of World War I. The American Legion was federally chartered on Sept. 16, 1919. The Legion has more than 2.2 million members. The event will kick off with the national anthem at 11:30 a.m. followed by festivities at noon at Encinitas Post, 210 West F St. Gates open at 11 a.m. Admission is free; adult lunch costs $15, lunch for children costs $10. Garden hosts Orchid Kokedama workshop

The San Diego Botanic Garden holds an Orchid Kokedama workshop from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday at the garden, 230 Quail Gardens Drive. The hands-on workshop teaches how to make an Orchid Kokedama, a traditional Japanese living art form where moss is used as a container for a plant. International Guitar Night is Thursday

The California Center for the Arts, Escondido, hosts International Guitar Night at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at 340 N. Escondido Blvd. The touring guitar festival brings together guitarists to exchange musical ideas in a public concert setting. 41st annual Doll Show slated next month

The Cameo Doll Club holds its 41st annual Doll Show and sale from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. March 2 at Resurrection Church, 1445 Conway Drive. The show features various dealers from throughout Southern California selling vintage, antique, original and artist dolls, along with accessories, bears, jewelry and doll supplies. Audubon talk focuses on Swainson’s hawks

The Buena Vista Audubon Society hosts Hal Cohen for a presentation on “Swainson’s Hawks by the Thousands” at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Audubon’s nature center, 2202 S. Coast Highway. Cohen, a retired marine biologist known as the “Hawk Guy,” will discuss how thousands of Swainson’s hawks divert from their 6,000-mile migration to feast on the protein- and fat-rich insect larvae in the Anza-Borrego Desert in spring. Church choir presents ‘Broadway Brunch’

The Village Church’s chancel choir presents “Broadway Brunch: Songs from the Silver Screen” at 12:15 p.m. Feb. 24 in the fellowship hall at the Village Church, 6225 Paseo Delicias. Senior center hosts Cherry Festival lunch

The Gloria McClellan Center will hold a “Country Cherry Festival Luncheon” at 11 a.m. Friday at 1400 Vale Terrace Drive. Entertainment will be by Cowboy Jack. Lunch features barbecued pulled pork sandwich, cole slaw, chuck wagon corn, cherry cobbler and milk. Lunch is served at noon.
